Rural Opioid Prescriber Training Program

SIU School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry received State of Illinois funding to develop and implement a training program for physicians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other opioid prescribers. The training focuses on best practices and prescription guidelines for opioids in the 66 counties within the SIU SOM region for one year. Activities include developing a statewide advisory group, performing an extensive literature review, identifying best practices, developing and delivery six video-conference trainings for opioid prescribers, providing continuing education credits, and program evaluation. Kitty Juul, Rural Health Project Coordinator with the CRHSSD, coordinates the project, acting as a liaison with all partnering departments and organizations.
